The Ministry of Housing and Urban Development has announced plans to construct 10,000 housing units, known as RENEWED HOPE MEDIC CITIES, in partnership with the Real Estate Developers Association of Nigeria (REDAN). This initiative aims to provide safe and affordable housing for Nigeria’s medical workers.

Housing Minister Ahmed Dangiwa revealed the plan during a meeting with the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) in Abuja. The Minister emphasized the importance of addressing the housing needs of medical workers, aligning with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

Dangiwa expressed gratitude for the commitment and sacrifices of medical workers, noting that their well-being, including access to housing, is a top priority. He acknowledged the challenges faced by medical workers and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting them.

“Housing is a fundamental need that directly impacts productivity, stability, and quality of life. We recognize the difficulties many healthcare workers face in securing suitable accommodation, particularly in high-demand urban centers where medical facilities are concentrated. Addressing these challenges requires strong partnerships between the government and professional bodies like yours”, he added.

The Minister informed the delegation that 10,112 housing units are currently under construction in 14 locations across the country. These locations include 3,112 units of Renewed Hope Cities in Karsana Abuja, 2,000 units in Lagos State, and 2,000 units in Kano State.

In addition to these projects, 12 on-going Renewed Hope Estates, each comprising 250 units, are being developed in 12 states. The Minister encouraged NARD members to take advantage of these housing projects to own their homes.Dangiwa outlined various ownership options, including up to 30-year National Housing Funds (NHF) Mortgage Loans, Rent to Own, Instalment Payment, and Outright Purchase. These options aim to make homeownership more accessible and affordable for medical workers.

“Your visit today strengthens our resolve to design housing interventions that serve our national heroes-those who dedicate their lives to saving others”. He said.An online portal has been created for easy application, making it convenient for medical workers to access these housing opportunities. The portal provides a streamlined process for applicants to submit their information and track their application status.

The RENEWED HOPE MEDIC CITIES project is a collaborative effort between the Ministries of Housing and Health, Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria, and a Public Private Partnership arrangement. This partnership brings together key stakeholders to support the development of affordable housing for medical workers.Dr. Tope Osundara, National President of NARD, applauded the Minister’s efforts in supporting President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda. Osundara emphasized the importance of providing decent and affordable housing for medical workers, citing its impact on their well-being and productivity.

The NARD President appealed to the Minister to assist the association in accessing the Renewed Hope Housing Agenda. He proposed a 1000 housing unit project under phase one, which would serve as a template for other members of the association across the states.Dr. Suleiman Abubakar Sadiq, representing REDAN and a member of NARD, explained that the RENEWED HOPE MEDIC CITIES project would provide 10,000 housing units for health workers across the nation. The project aims to enhance the welfare of healthcare workers and ensure they have access to safe and affordable housing.

The construction of the RENEWED HOPE MEDIC CITIES is expected to commence between January and February 2025. The project will be developed in phases, with the initial phase focusing on the construction of 10,000 housing units.

The Minister reiterated the government’s commitment to supporting policies and programs that uplift the living standards of Nigerians. He emphasized the importance of providing affordable housing for medical workers, citing its impact on their productivity and the overall healthcare system.
