FCCPC Takes Action: Summons MultiChoice to Explain Recent Increase in DStv and GOtv Subscription Fees

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has summoned MultiChoice Nigeria to explain its proposed subscription price increase for DStv and GOtv services. This move comes after MultiChoice announced significant hikes in subscription rates, with the DStv Premium bouquet increasing to N44,500 from N37,000 and the Compact+ subscription rising to N30,000 from N2,000.

The new rates are set to take effect on March 1, 2025, but the FCCPC has invoked its authority under Sections 32 and 33 of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act (FCCPA) to investigate potential market dominance abuses and anti-competitive practices.

The FCCPC is concerned about the frequency of price increases faced by Nigerian consumers and allegations that MultiChoice employs disparate pricing strategies across different markets. The commission has warned that failure to satisfactorily explain these adjustments could lead to regulatory penalties, sanctions, or corrective measures aimed at safeguarding consumer interests.

MultiChoice Nigeria’s chief executive officer has been summoned to a hearing at the FCCPC’s headquarters on Thursday. The FCCPC is working with sector regulators and relevant agencies to ensure equitable competition and consumer protection across Nigeria’s broadcasting and digital subscription sectors ¹.
