Africa’s First TV Broadcaster Anike Agbaje-Williams Passes Away at 88

Anike Agbaje-Williams, a pioneering television presenter and Africa’s first TV presenter, has passed away at the age of 88 in Ibadan, Oyo State. Her demise was announced in a statement by Banji Sokoya, a relative.Born on October 23, 1937, Ms. Agbaje-Williams made history on October 31, 1959, by becoming the first face to appear on the Western Nigerian Television station (WNTV), Africa’s first TV station, during its test transmission and official opening night.

Ms. Agbaje-Williams also holds the distinction of being the first voice heard on the Western Nigerian Broadcasting Service (WNBS), Africa’s first commercial radio station. Her remarkable achievements earned her the ‘Double-First’ moniker, recognizing her pioneering role in both radio and television broadcasting in Africa.

Throughout her illustrious career, Ms. Agbaje-Williams left an indelible mark on the broadcasting industry, inspiring generations of broadcasters and media professionals. Her legacy continues to be celebrated, and her contributions to the development of broadcasting in Africa remain unparalleled.Ms. Agbaje-Williams’ passing marks the end of an era, but her trailblazing spirit and achievements will continue to inspire and motivate future generations of broadcasters and media professionals.

The broadcasting community and beyond will deeply miss Ms. Agbaje-Williams, but her lasting legacy will continue to be felt for years to come.“Her death is a moment of great sadness for the entire family, and her loss would be greatly felt by all those who knew her,” said the family statement. “The family profoundly mourns the passing of a great icon and a much-loved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.”

It added, “The family understands that her loss will be deeply felt throughout the country and also abroad by many people. They would be comforted and reassured by the knowledge that she lived a glorious, remarkable and impactful life.

“She inspired lots of fans and mentees through the years, and the family appreciates your thoughts and prayers. She will remain in our hearts forever.”
