The Federal Government has facilitated the release of six Nigerian women who were wrongfully held in Cape Verde over unfounded human trafficking allegations.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed the women had regained their freedom and departed Cape Verde. The ministry reaffirmed its ongoing commitment to safeguarding the rights and welfare of Nigerians abroad.

According to the ministry’s spokesperson, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, the women were on vacation in Cape Verde when they were unjustly arrested and detained by local authorities on suspicion of trafficking—an accusation that was later disproved. “The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is pleased to inform the public that the Nigerian ladies detained in Cape Verde have all been released and have exited the country,” the statement read.

The statement also highlighted the instrumental role played by Nigeria’s Mission in Guinea-Bissau, which coordinated diplomatic efforts that ultimately led to their freedom. “The Ministry, through its Mission in Guinea-Bissau, actively engaged with Cape Verdean authorities to secure their release. The six women had travelled to Cape Verde for leisure but were unfortunately detained on false trafficking charges,” it added.
