The House of Representatives has approved a 10-year security protection plan for Umar Audu, an investigative journalist with DAILY NIGERIAN, in acknowledgment of his exposé on widespread certificate fraud linked to degree mills in the Benin Republic.
Audu’s undercover investigation uncovered a syndicate facilitating the issuance of fake university degrees to Nigerians, with many of these certificates later fraudulently validated by government bodies, including the Ministry of Education. The scandal is currently under scrutiny by a joint committee comprising the House Committees on University, Polytechnic, Interior, Foreign Affairs, and Youth Development.
During Monday’s proceedings, Abubakar Fulata, chair of the committee, conveyed the House’s resolution. He called on the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies, including the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), to ensure Audu receives consistent protection over the next decade.
“We commend Audu for his bravery. We urge the Minister of Interior to ensure that the Civil Defence supports this effort alongside the police,” Fulata stated.
