President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a fresh five-year tenure for Brigadier-General Mohammed Buba Marwa (rtd) as Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA). The announcement was made on Friday by Presidential Adviser Bayo Onanuga.

Marwa, first appointed in January 2021 under former President Muhammadu Buhari, will now lead the agency until 2031. Before joining the NDLEA, he chaired the Presidential Advisory Committee for the Elimination of Drug Abuse from 2018 to 2020.

A seasoned military officer and administrator, Marwa previously served as military governor of Lagos and Borno States. His career includes roles as academic registrar at the Nigerian Defence Academy, Brigade Major of the 23 Armoured Brigade, ADC to then Army Chief Lt-Gen Theophilus Danjuma, Deputy Defence Adviser in Washington, and Defence Adviser at the UN Mission. He holds a Master of Public and International Affairs from the University of Pittsburgh and a Master of Public Administration from Harvard University.

His time at NDLEA has drawn widespread praise. Under his leadership, the agency has arrested more than 73,000 drug traffickers, seized over 15 million kilogrammes of illegal substances, and intensified national anti-drug campaigns. Tinubu said the renewal reflects confidence in Marwa’s commitment to combating drug trafficking and abuse, urging him to remain steadfast in protecting Nigerians—especially young people—from the threat of hard drugs.
