She emphasised that although measles can lead to serious illness, it is preventable, urging people to get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.Authorities say the overall risk to the public remains low but advised residents to stay alert and take necessary precautions.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, measles is one of the most contagious diseases globally. However, the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine offers long-lasting protection against it. Symptoms typically appear within seven to 14 days after infection and include high fever, runny nose, cough, and a distinctive rash.
Nationwide, cases have been reported across 33 states, with about 92 per cent involving unvaccinated individuals or those with unknown vaccination status. The United States has recorded more than 1,671 confirmed measles cases so far in 2026.
