Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali has suffered a devastating loss, announcing the passing of his mother barely a month after his father’s demise. Nwabali shared the heartbreaking news on X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday evening, writing, “Rip mom” and describing the year as the “worst of my life already.”
Prior to the announcement, Nwabali had posted, “A very very crazy world indeed,” hinting at the challenges he was facing. The 28-year-old goalkeeper did not provide further details on the circumstances surrounding his mother’s passing. This tragic loss comes just over a month after Nwabali lost his father, Godspower Onyekam Abali, also known as Chief Onyeogazrim 1 of Okwuzi, who passed away at the age of 67.
Following his father’s passing, Nwabali was granted leave and excused from participating in the Super Eagles’ match against Rwanda in a 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualification game in mid-November.The Super Eagles’ Team Administrator, Dayo Enebi Achor, had stated, “He has been excused from the game. However, the player will come to watch the match and cheer his teammates on.”
Nwabali gained widespread recognition early last year for his standout performances with the Super Eagles at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), playing in every match as the team made it to the final.The South Africa-based goalkeeper has been a key player for the Super Eagles, and this double tragedy is a significant blow to him and his family.
