
Hip-hop artiste Habeeb Okikiola, known as Portable, avoided a three-month jail term after paying a N30,000 court-imposed fine.A court presided over by Chief Magistrate Babajide Ilo in Ifo, Ogun State, sentenced him to three months in prison for assault but offered a fine as an alternative.
Inspector Olumide Awoleke, the Police Prosecutor, stated that the offence took place on November 18, 2022, around 11:00 am in Okeosa, Ilogbo, under the Ifo Magisterial District.
According to the charge sheet, Portable and unnamed accomplices conspired to commit assault, violating Section 517 of the Ogun State Criminal Code Laws, 2006. He was also accused of physically assaulting Osimosu Emmanuel Oluwafemi, contrary to Section 351 of the same law.
In another count, he was accused of stealing music equipment in 2022 at the same location, which included a Yamaha H55 studio monitor, a studio 2 interface connection cable, and an AKG P420 condenser microphone, violating Sections 383 and 384 and punishable under Section 390.
The court found Portable guilty on counts one and two, sentencing him to one month in prison or a N10,000 fine for the first count and two months or a N20,000 fine for the second.
The singer had earlier appeared before the court in April 2023 on a three-count charge involving assault and theft under charge No. MIF/192C/2023 and was granted bail of N300,000 with two family-member sureties. He was re-arrested after previously failing to appear and was remanded until the final judgment was delivered.
