Niger State Governor, Mohammed Bago, has announced a N1 billion relief package to support victims of the recent devastating floods in Mokwa Local Government Area. The announcement came during the governor’s on-the-spot assessment of the flood-ravaged communities, where he pledged the state’s full commitment to aid recovery and reconstruction efforts.

As part of immediate humanitarian assistance, Governor Bago also directed the distribution of ten trucks each of rice, beans, maize, millet, and sorghum to the affected residents. He assured the public that all relief materials and financial aid will be distributed equitably through a committee chaired by Deputy Governor Yakubu Garba.

To address long-term housing needs, Bago revealed that the state would allocate land and provide essential services for the resettlement of displaced persons. He instructed the Ministry for Land and Survey to issue a Certificate of Occupancy (C of O) to the federal government, enabling the immediate construction of permanent homes for the victims. He emphasized that efforts would be made to minimize the victims’ stay in IDP camps.

The governor expressed gratitude to the federal government, donor agencies, traditional institutions, and individuals who have supported the victims during the crisis. In a related move, Bago also announced the launch of a N7 billion road and bridge construction project linking Mokwa to Rabba, which aims to restore connectivity between communities cut off by the flooding. Construction is set to commence on Tuesday, June 10, 2025, with contractors already mobilizing to the site.

According to the governor, the project is part of a broader infrastructure recovery initiative designed to rebuild critical public assets damaged by the flood disaster. Meanwhile, Speaker of the Niger State House of Assembly, Abdulmalik Sarkin Daji, expressed heartfelt sympathy to the people of Mokwa and urged them to remain resilient. Also showing solidarity were Etsu Nupe and Chairman of the Niger State Council of Traditional Rulers, Yahaya Abubakar, and former Deputy Governor Mohammed Ketso, who both commended the governor’s swift intervention and commitment to supporting flood victims.
