Violence erupted in Rano Local Government Area of Kano State on Monday, May 26, following the death of a young man, Abdullahi Musa, who reportedly died in police custody after being arrested for a traffic-related offence. His death triggered widespread protests, during which the Rano Divisional Police Headquarters was set ablaze by enraged youths. Residents claimed Musa died during interrogation, with eyewitnesses accusing the Divisional Police Officer, identified as Baba Ali, of physically assaulting him.

One resident stated that Musa was brutally beaten by the DPO and later died in custody, sparking the protest. As the crowd gathered at the police station demanding justice, officers allegedly opened fire to disperse them, injuring at least two protesters—Hassan Salisu Hassan and Muhammad Ibrahim—who were taken to Rano General Hospital for treatment.

In retaliation, the protesters reportedly threw stones and later torched the police station. The DPO, Baba Ali, also sustained injuries during the incident and was taken for medical treatment.

The Kano State Police Command confirmed the incident and stated that a full investigation would be conducted. The spokesperson, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, assured the public via his official Facebook page that the matter would be thoroughly examined.
