It seems there is an ongoing internal conflict within the Labour Party of Nigeria, with the appointment of Senator Esther Nenadi Usman as the Chairperson of a 29-member Caretaker Committee. This committee was established to resolve the party’s leadership crisis and organize a convention within 90 days. The move has caused tensions, with Julius Abure, the current National Chairman, rejecting the legitimacy of the committee.

Abure and his allies argue that the meeting which appointed Usman is illegal and not in line with the party’s constitution. They claim the decisions made at the convention in Nnewi earlier this year are still valid.

Key figures like Peter Obi, Datti Baba-Ahmed, and Governor Alex Otti back the caretaker committee, signaling a split in party leadership as they prepare for the 2027 elections. The situation could shape the future direction of the Labour Party, especially in resolving internal disputes.
