Wike and Diri at Odds Over Supporters’ Planned Mega Rally in Bayelsa

Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State and the Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike, appear to be at odds over a reported plan by Wike’s supporters to hold a mega rally in Bayelsa. In addition to the rally, Wike’s supporters are also said to be planning the inauguration of a support group for the minister.

According to a report by the News Agency of Nigeria, Governor Diri on Thursday expressed security concerns regarding the planned event, warning that the Bayelsa State Government would not tolerate any activity that could disrupt the state’s peace. He urged security agencies, youths, elders, and traditional rulers to remain vigilant.

Responding in a statement from Abuja on Friday, Mr. Olayinka asserted that Nigerians have the right to express support for anyone, anywhere, and at any time. He questioned why Governor Diri, despite having access to security resources, would raise an alarm on national television over mere speculation of a rally. Olayinka emphasized that holding a lawful rally is a fundamental right and added that if Wike intended to attend any political event in Bayelsa or elsewhere, he would notify security agencies accordingly.
