A Nigerian Navy officer, Lieutenant A.M. Yarima, who recently had an altercation with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, reportedly escaped an assassination attempt on Sunday evening in Abuja. According to Vanguard, two unmarked Hilux vans with no number plates, carrying men dressed in black, trailed Yarima from the NIPCO Filling Station off the Airport Road Expressway to Gado Nasco Way.
A source said the officer noticed the surveillance and executed a “strategic maneuver” that enabled him to evade the suspected assailants at about 6:30 p.m. “The matter is already under investigation and is receiving the seriousness it deserves,” the source added, noting that further details are being withheld for security reasons to avoid jeopardizing the inquiry.
The incident comes barely a week after Lieutenant Yarima was verbally attacked by the FCT Minister during a heated confrontation at a disputed demolition site in the Gaduwa District of Abuja. The exchange, which was captured on video, sparked divided reactions among Nigerians: while some criticized the young officer, others faulted the FCT Minister for calling him a “fool.”
