Former US President Bill Clinton told lawmakers on Friday that he was unaware of Jeffrey Epstein’s criminal activities and had ended his association with the financier long before any of the wrongdoing came to light. “I had no idea of the crimes Epstein was committing,” Clinton said in his opening statement during his deposition before the Republican-led House Oversight Committee as part of its investigation into Epstein, which he shared on X on Friday. “I saw nothing, and I did nothing wrong.”
Clinton added, “As someone who grew up in a home with domestic abuse, not only would I not have flown on his plane if I had any inkling of what he was doing—I would have turned him in myself and led the call for justice for his crimes, not sweetheart deals.” He is testifying after the committee subpoenaed both him and his wife, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, as part of its inquiry into Epstein. Hillary Clinton appeared before the committee on Thursday.
The depositions are being held behind closed doors, but a committee spokesperson confirmed that videos and transcripts will be released to the public afterwards. James Comer, chairman of the House Oversight Committee, told reporters that Clinton had so far undergone roughly two hours of questioning—one hour from Republican members and another from Democrats, according to The Associated Press. Comer said Republicans on the panel would have an additional hour to question Clinton before the committee breaks. On the same day, US President Donald Trump commented, “I like Bill Clinton and I don’t like seeing him deposed.”
Earlier in January, the Clintons had declined to testify, stating they had already provided lawmakers with all the information they possessed regarding Epstein and his longtime associate, Ghislaine Maxwell. The couple eventually agreed to testify after Republicans threatened to hold them in contempt of Congress. Bill Clinton is among several high-profile individuals who had connections to Epstein. His name and photograph appear multiple times in the so-called “Epstein files,” the documents related to the Justice Department’s investigations into Epstein that have been made public.
