Davido Fires Back at Rarara Over Criticism of World Cup Protest

Nigerian music star Davido has responded to criticism from Kano-based singer Dauda Kahutu Rarara over his decision to spotlight Nigeria’s kidnapping crisis during the 2026 FIFA World Cup ceremonies. The controversy began after Rarara accused Davido of exposing Nigeria’s security challenges to the international community by using his outfit to draw attention to kidnapped victims. According to the singer, publicising such issues on a global stage could undermine ongoing efforts to secure the release of victims and inadvertently give publicity to criminal groups.

Rarara also suggested that Davido’s actions were politically motivated, alleging that the Afrobeats star was influenced by his support for political interests in Osun State. He argued that drawing international attention to the crisis during a major global event was inappropriate and could complicate sensitive security matters.

Citing a personal experience, Rarara claimed that public campaigns surrounding kidnapping cases can sometimes delay negotiations. He recalled an incident involving the abduction of his mother, saying public intervention at the time prolonged efforts to secure her release. In response, Davido rejected the allegations, insisting that patriotism requires speaking out against insecurity rather than remaining silent. He argued that Nigerians should not place political loyalty above the welfare and safety of citizens.

The singer also criticised what he described as a lack of compassion and warned against prioritising partisan interests over national concerns. He urged Nigerians to be truthful, patriotic and committed to addressing the country’s security challenges. The exchange has sparked debate among Nigerians over the role of celebrities in social advocacy. While some have praised Davido for using his platform to highlight pressing national issues and demand accountability, others agree with Rarara’s view that public attention can sometimes complicate delicate security operations and negotiations.
