A devastating knife attack has marred celebrations in the western German city of Solingen, where residents had gathered to commemorate the 650th anniversary of their 160,000-strong community. The attack occurred around 9:45 pm local time on Friday, turning a festive evening into a scene of horror.

According to police reports, three people were killed and five others were seriously injured in the random stabbings that took place in the city’s market square, where live bands were performing as part of the Festival of Diversity. Authorities believe the attack was carried out by a lone perpetrator who fled the scene and remains at large.

The police have launched a large-scale manhunt, with officers actively searching for the suspect. “Both victims and witnesses are currently being questioned,” a police spokesperson stated, emphasizing the urgency of the ongoing investigation.

North Rhine-Westphalia’s top security official, Herbert Reul, visited the scene early on Saturday, describing the incident as a targeted attack on human life. However, he refrained from speculating on the attacker’s motive, saying, “None of us knows why… I can’t say anything about the motive now.” Reul noted that the attacker left the area “relatively quickly” after the incident.

The Festival of Diversity, which was meant to run through Sunday, has been abruptly halted, with authorities instructing festivalgoers to leave the area. The event, featuring live music, cabaret, and acrobatics, was supposed to be a joyful celebration of the city’s rich history.

Local newspaper Solinger Tageblatt described the rapid shift in atmosphere, with the party mood quickly turning to shock and tears. Witnesses recounted the chaotic moments that followed the attack, as people struggled to comprehend the violence that had suddenly erupted.

Solingen’s mayor, Tim Kurzbach, expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy in a Facebook post, saying, “We in Solingen are all in shock. We all wanted to celebrate our city’s anniversary together and now have dead and wounded to lament.” He added, “It breaks my heart that an attack on our city happened.”

The incident has reignited discussions about Germany’s knife control laws, with the government recently pushing for stricter regulations on the types of knives that can be carried in public. The attack in Solingen follows a similar tragedy in June when a 29-year-old policeman was fatally stabbed in Mannheim during a confrontation at a right-wing demonstration.

As Solingen mourns the loss of life and prays for the recovery of the injured, the city is left grappling with the shock and sadness of an event that was meant to unite its people in celebration.
