Chidimma Vannesa Adetshina, the newly crowned Miss Universe Nigeria, has committed to representing Nigeria with pride and honor during her reign.

Adetshina, who holds dual citizenship in Nigeria and South Africa, faced xenophobic backlash in South Africa after being invited to participate in the Miss Universe Nigeria contest. Despite these challenges, she emerged victorious and expressed deep gratitude to Nigerians for their overwhelming support and warm hospitality throughout the competition.

“I want to thank everyone for the incredible reception. It’s a great honor to be here, wearing this crown with immense pride, and I promise to make Nigeria proud,” said Adetshina.

At just 23 years old, this is Adetshina’s first visit to Nigeria. She praised Nigerians for their friendliness and welcoming nature.

“I’ve been eager to visit Nigeria for a long time. I kept telling my dad that this year, I had to make it happen, and I’m thrilled that it did. Before arriving at the airport, I was nervous and filled with mixed emotions, especially since it’s been 20 years since I left Nigeria. But as soon as I landed, I felt surrounded by warmth and acceptance. I knew then that I was going to enjoy my time here. These past 10 days have been nothing short of amazing,” she shared.

Earlier, the Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) commended Adetshina for her resilience, especially given the challenges she faced in winning the Miss Universe Nigeria title. She also urged Nigerians abroad with dual citizenship to value and honor both their nationalities.

“Welcome home, Chidimma. This is just the beginning of many more achievements in your life. I want to remind all Nigerians abroad, especially those with dual citizenship, to never take their second nationality for granted. Nigeria has supported you through difficult times, and your South African citizenship has also played a crucial role. This is who we are as Nigerians—warm, friendly, humane, and kind,” she said.

The Chairman also emphasized the importance of dual citizenship, especially for those who, like Adetshina, have spent years away from their home country. “Chidimma, you haven’t been back home in 20 years, and you’re only 23. If you hold dual citizenship, take it seriously. We’re glad you’re finally home, and we’ll support you in whatever steps you take next.”

Guy Murray-Bruce, President of Silverbird Group and the organizer of Miss Universe Nigeria, also expressed his gratitude for the warm reception given to Adetshina and the Miss Universe Nigeria team. He highlighted the challenges Adetshina faced, including xenophobic attacks, before achieving her prestigious title.

“Thank you for welcoming us today. Chidimma’s journey to becoming Miss Universe Nigeria was unique, especially considering her dual citizenship. She was one of five strong contestants, but her story truly stands out,” said Murray-Bruce.
