The Dangote Refinery has officially started producing petrol, marking a pivotal moment in Nigeria’s energy industry.
During the inauguration event, Aliko Dangote, CEO of the Dangote Group, expressed his deep appreciation to the Nigerian government and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for their unwavering support in achieving this milestone.
“I want to extend my gratitude to the people of Nigeria and President Ahmed Bola Tinubu for fostering an environment that enabled us to accomplish this monumental task of providing energy to our nation, fueling growth, development, and prosperity,” Dangote said.
He emphasized the significant impact the refinery will have on the Nigerian economy, particularly in stabilizing the Naira. Dangote praised President Tinubu for the innovative “Naira for crude and Naira for product” policy, which he believes will reduce the demand for foreign currency and bring stability to the market.
“By reducing the demand for dollars by 40%, this policy will help stabilize the market,” Dangote explained. “With this refinery operational, we can accurately track Nigeria’s true consumption. We will monitor every loaded truck and ship, ensuring transparency and curbing fuel diversion.”
Dangote also took the opportunity to commend his team, particularly D.V.G. Edwin, Vice President of Oil and Gas, and Kunle Alake, Vice President, for their tireless dedication over the past seven years.
“Without their support, we wouldn’t be where we are today. I am deeply grateful to them,” Dangote said, also acknowledging the vital contributions of Fatima, a key figure in the project’s commercial success.
The refinery’s capacity extends beyond meeting Nigeria’s fuel demands, aiming to serve the broader sub-Saharan African market as well.
“I hope this refinery will transform the energy dynamics, not just in Nigeria but across sub-Saharan Africa,” Dangote added.
The event concluded with Dangote presenting a sample of the newly produced petrol, symbolizing the beginning of a new chapter in Nigeria’s energy landscape.
