The Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) has expressed deep concern over the recent hike in the price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), warning that it will worsen the already high poverty levels among workers.

According to TUC President, Festus Osifo, the union was alarmed by the sudden increase in fuel prices, which was implemented without consulting key stakeholders. He described the decision as a blatant disregard for the welfare of Nigerians, especially the working class, who are disproportionately affected by such measures.

“This unexpected hike has triggered widespread apprehension and despair across the country, coming at a time when citizens are already grappling with severe economic hardship,” Osifo said.

In addition to the fuel price increase, Osifo criticized the recent 250% rise in electricity tariffs, stressing that electricity is essential for the survival of the poorest in society. He questioned the timing and the scale of these increases, arguing that the burden is unfairly placed on ordinary Nigerians, while those in power continue to enjoy affluence.

“Why should ordinary citizens endure the pains of high living costs while those in positions of authority benefit from increased allocations and luxury?” he asked.

Osifo reiterated that the TUC had previously proposed strategies to strengthen the Naira and enhance its value, highlighting the weak currency as one of the key drivers of Nigeria’s economic woes. He emphasized that the union stands firmly with Nigerian workers, who are struggling under the weight of rising inflation and living costs.

He also warned that the hike in fuel and electricity prices would only exacerbate these challenges, leading to greater hardship and potential social unrest.

“We call on the government to immediately reverse these decisions, implement policies to strengthen the Naira, and take concrete steps to ease the suffering of Nigerians,” Osifo urged. “The government must act quickly to restore public confidence and prevent further deterioration in living conditions.”

Osifo concluded by reaffirming the TUC’s commitment to defending the rights of Nigerian workers, advocating for policies that promote social justice, fair wages, and a decent working environment.
