Nigeria Announces Plans to Reopen Embassy in North KoreaThe Interim Commissioner for Affairs (Chargé D’affaires) of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in North Korea, Patrick Imodu Imologome, has revealed plans to reopen the Nigerian embassy in North Korea.

Imologome made the announcement during a courtesy visit to the Russian Ambassador to North Korea, A. И. Mategore, in Pyongyang. Details of the meeting were shared by the Russian Embassy in North Korea on Facebook.Nigeria’s diplomatic relations with North Korea were put on hold in 2021, following the United Nations ban on hiring expatriates and professionals from North Korea. The ban was imposed as a sanction in response to North Korea’s nuclear weapon and missile activities.

Despite the ban, Nigeria maintained a cordial relationship with North Korea, seeking their assistance in combating the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. Medical professionals from North Korea were flown into Nigeria to provide support.

However, in 2021, a health professional drew the UN’s attention to Nigeria’s disregard for the UN ban on North Korean labor. This led to a reevaluation of Nigeria’s diplomatic ties with North Korea. With the planned reopening of the Nigerian embassy in North Korea, Nigeria will become the second African country, after Egypt, to maintain a diplomatic presence in North Korea.

The reopening of the embassy is expected to strengthen bilateral ties between Nigeria and North Korea, promoting cooperation in areas such as trade, education, and culture.
