The Nigerian Olympic Committee (NOC) has confirmed that it submitted its expression of interest to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games ahead of the March 28, 2025, deadline.

While the bid marks a significant step forward, Nigeria can only proceed to formally compete for hosting rights with the full support of the federal government. Nigeria previously lost out on hosting the 2014 edition of the Games to Glasgow, Scotland.

In a statement issued by NOC spokesperson Tony Nezianya, the committee revealed that Abuja has been proposed as the host city, highlighting the bid as an opportunity to display Nigeria’s development, strengthen its global presence, and boost its sporting culture. The statement noted that Nigeria last hosted a major multi-sport event—the African Games—in 2003, also in Abuja.

What experience, according to the NOC, provides a strong platform for managing the logistics, infrastructure, and hospitality required for a successful Commonwealth Games.

“This bid is not just about hosting a sporting event, but also about telling the story of Nigeria’s progress and readiness to take on global responsibilities,” the NOC stated. The upcoming edition of the Commonwealth Games is scheduled for March 17–29, 2026, in Glasgow, after the original host, Australia’s Victoria state, withdrew due to rising costs.
