The Nigerian Senate has approved the Federal Medical Centre Act (Amendment) Bill, 2024, paving the way for the establishment of a Federal Medical Centre in Kafanchan, Kaduna State.

Sponsored by Senator Sunday Marshall Katung of Kaduna South Senatorial District, the bill is intended to expand access to quality healthcare services in the region. Senator Katung noted that the new facility will ease the burden of long-distance travel for specialist treatment, which often results in delays and avoidable deaths. He expressed appreciation to President Bola Tinubu, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau, and fellow lawmakers for their backing.

Highlighting the broader impact, Katung described the development as a turning point for Southern Kaduna, where communities have faced long-standing healthcare challenges. He said the medical centre will enhance healthcare delivery while also generating employment, attracting health professionals, supporting medical research, and improving public health standards. He added that the bill’s passage marks a significant milestone in ensuring the successful establishment and operation of the centre.
