The Ebonyi State Government has sealed 283 illegal and substandard primary and secondary schools over the past two years.Commissioner for Education, Prof. Paul Nwobasi, disclosed this during an interactive session with journalists in Abakaliki on Thursday. He stated that the affected schools were scattered across various parts of the state.
Nwobasi described the proliferation of substandard schools as a serious concern to the government and warned proprietors to either shut down such schools or regularise them in line with established standards. He said the closure of the schools was part of the government’s effort to ensure quality education in the state and urged unapproved private school operators to engage with the Ministry of Education for guidance on how to meet proper requirements and secure necessary approvals.
On educational infrastructure, Nwobasi revealed that the state government is constructing 39 classroom buildings for secondary schools across the 13 local government areas. He added that 36 buildings for primary schools, with two in each LGA, are also under construction. The structures, according to him, are designed to be model classroom blocks with an aesthetic finish.
