The Labour Party has announced that its presidential ticket for the 2027 general elections is open to all aspirants, with a commitment to conducting a transparent primary process.Speaking at a press conference in Abuja on Friday, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Abayomi Arabambi, emphasized that no aspirant will be given preferential treatment, promising a level playing field for all contenders.

“There shall be primary elections in the Labour Party, and no aspirant will be favoured this time around,” Arabambi stated. He criticised the selection of Peter Obi as the party’s flagbearer in the 2023 election, calling it a costly error that betrayed the expectations of Nigerians. According to him, the party is determined to correct that mistake as it prepares for the next election cycle.

Obi, who came third in the 2023 presidential poll after winning 12 states including the Federal Capital Territory, has recently aligned himself with a political coalition under the African Democratic Congress. This move has raised questions about his continued affiliation with the Labour Party.

Arabambi accused Obi of abandoning the party and described the new coalition he joined as a grouping of politicians responsible for the nation’s challenges between 2015 and 2023.He dismissed the coalition as lacking integrity, saying, “Instead of a leader with debt and discipline and demonstrable progress for national renewal, Nigeria got a populist whose greatest skill is telling people what they want to hear.”

He added that the coalition should be rejected by Nigerians, and reiterated that the Labour Party’s presidential ticket remains open to all qualified Nigerians. “We wish Obi well in his Yahoo Yahoo coalition, but to let him know that the Labour Party presidential ticket is now open to all Nigerians. There shall be a primary election this time around, and no aspirant would be favoured,” Arabambi concluded.
