Super Falcons players paid a compassionate visit to South Africa’s Gabriela Salgado in hospital on Wednesday, a day after she sustained a serious injury during the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) semi-final match in Casablanca. The Nigerian team presented Salgado with a signed Super Falcons jersey in a heartfelt gesture of solidarity. The visit took place at the Mohamed VI University Hospital, where the South African winger is receiving treatment following a traumatic leg injury.

In a statement signed by team media officer Mary Akinsola, the Super Falcons expressed deep sadness over the incident and extended their support not only to Salgado but to the entire Banyana Banyana team. “Our immediate thoughts are solely with her for comfort, care, and the recovery journey ahead,” the statement read. “We are holding Gabriela, her teammates, her family and close friends in our hearts.”The Nigerian players, some of whom were visibly emotional during the match, were keen to follow up with a personal visit to Salgado. Their message emphasized unity beyond rivalry: “The spirit of competition instantly fades in moments like these, replaced by a shared sense of care for a fellow athlete.”

Salgado underwent successful surgery on Wednesday to repair a fractured mid-shaft of her left leg. According to Banyana Banyana’s team doctor, Dr. Lindi Mokoena, she will be sidelined for the rest of the year but is recovering well under expert care. The South African Football Association, along with CAF, has praised the medical attention provided in Morocco.South African President Cyril Ramaphosa also joined in sending support, describing Salgado as “a woman of bravery and skill” and wishing her a full and speedy recovery.

Meanwhile, South Africa will face Ghana in the third-place match on Friday at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium, while Nigeria meets hosts Morocco in the final on Saturday.
