The US State Department has revoked the visas of more than 6,000 international students for overstaying and breaking American laws. The move is part of President Donald Trump’s administration’s broader crackdown on immigration and student visa holders.

In a statement on Monday, the department said the violations included crimes such as assault, burglary, and driving under the influence of alcohol. It added that some visas were also withdrawn because holders allegedly expressed “support for terrorism,” though it did not clarify the definition.

According to the breakdown, more than 4,000 of the revoked visas involved visitors who committed crimes while in the US, including assault and DUIs. Another 800 students reportedly lost their visas over assault-related offences, while 200–300 cases were linked to what the department described as “terrorism done under INA 3B,” a section of US law that broadly defines terrorist activity as acts that endanger life or break the law.The Trump administration has also targeted students accused of antisemitism after protesting in support of Palestine earlier this year.

In a statement quoted by Fox News Digital, the department said: “Every single student visa revoked under the Trump Administration has happened because the individual has either broken the law or expressed support for terrorism while in the United States.”

Earlier in 2025, the US suspended interviews for student visa applicants worldwide. When processing resumed in June, new requirements were introduced mandating applicants to unlock their social media accounts for review. Consular officers were also instructed to flag posts or messages considered hostile toward the United States, its institutions, or values. A State Department official said the measures reflect the expectation of American citizens that their government must prioritize national security.
