Italian fashion icon Giorgio Armani has died at the age of 91, his company announced on Thursday, saying he passed away peacefully “surrounded by his loved ones.”

In a statement, the Armani Group described him as its “creator, founder, and tireless driving force,” noting that he remained devoted to his work until his final days. His funeral will be private, though the public will be able to pay their respects in a funeral chamber in Milan over the weekend.

Armani, often referred to as Il Signor Armani by his employees, founded his fashion house in Milan in 1975 and quickly rose to global prominence, dressing countless stars and pioneering the concept of red-carpet fashion. His empire later expanded to include the Emporio Armani line, luxury hotels, and a wide lifestyle brand.

Though he cancelled shows in Milan and Paris this year due to health concerns, Armani continued overseeing his collections remotely, insisting he remained involved in every detail. His passing comes just weeks before the 50th anniversary of his label. Tributes have poured in, with Italy’s Culture Minister Alessandro Giuli hailing him as “a leading figure in Italian culture” who transformed elegance into a “universal language” and redefined the connection between fashion, cinema, and society. Armani leaves behind an enduring legacy as one of the greatest designers of modern times.
