The Federal Government, on Tuesday, instituted legal action against politician Omoyele Sowore, Meta (parent company of Facebook), and X Corp. over allegations of cyberbullying President Bola Tinubu.

The case, with suit number FHC/ABJ/CR/484/2025, was filed at the Federal High Court in Abuja by Mohammed Abubakar, Director of Public Prosecutions at the Federal Ministry of Justice.According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Sowore — publisher of Sahara Reporters and former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) — is facing a five-count charge under the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Amendment Act, 2024.

He is accused of making a false post on August 25 via his official X handle, @YeleSowore, where he referred to President Tinubu as “a criminal.” The post read: “THIS CRIMINAL @OFFICIALPBAT ACTUALLY WENT TO BRAZIL TO STATE THAT THERE IS NO MORE CORRUPTION UNDER HIS REGIME IN NIGERIA. WHAT AUDACITY TO LIE SHAMELESSLY!”

Prosecutors allege Sowore knowingly published the statement to incite unrest and division among Nigerians with opposing political views. The Department of State Services (DSS) had earlier requested that Facebook and X take down the post, prompting the inclusion of Meta and X as co-defendants for allegedly enabling the dissemination of the content. The case is yet to be assigned to a judge for hearing.
