Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger have announced their withdrawal from the International Criminal Court (ICC), describing it as a tool of neo-colonial imperialism.

In a joint statement on Monday, the three countries said the ICC had failed to address war crimes, crimes against humanity, genocide, and crimes of aggression. They also expressed plans to establish local mechanisms to promote peace and justice.

Under ICC rules, a withdrawal takes effect one year after a state formally notifies the UN secretary-general.The decision comes as the three nations continue to battle deadly violence from armed groups linked to Al Qaeda and Daesh.

Established in 2002, the ICC was created to prosecute individuals responsible for the gravest international crimes in situations where national authorities are unwilling or unable to act.
