Emirates Airline Bans Passengers from Using Power Banks on Flights

Starting October 1, 2025, Emirates will enforce a strict ban on the in-flight use of power banks. Passengers may still carry one power bank under 100Wh in their hand luggage, but charging or operating it during the flight will no longer be allowed.

The airline says the policy stems from safety assessments highlighting the risks of lithium-ion batteries, particularly thermal runaway — a chain reaction that can cause overheating, fire, or explosion. Low-cost or poorly regulated power banks, often lacking safeguards like automatic shut-off, are flagged as especially dangerous.

Emirates joins carriers such as Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Korean Air, and AirAsia in tightening rules after several fire incidents linked to power banks, including a 2023 Air Busan case that injured 27 passengers. Travelers are urged to pre-charge devices before departure, use in-seat charging ports where available, and ensure power banks remain accessible in the cabin but never in checked baggage. Failure to comply may lead to confiscation or, in extreme cases, denied boarding.
