If you plan to visit Burkina Faso, the U.S. Embassy in Ouagadougou advises you to review the Department of State’s Country Specific Information Sheet for details on entry and exit requirements, safety, security, health guidance, and other essential travel information.

The Department of State also encourages travelers to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP), a free service that allows U.S. citizens to register their trips abroad. Enrollment helps the Embassy contact you in case of an emergency and provides email updates about security, safety, and other important events in Burkina Faso. Registration is voluntary and free of charge. Travelers may also visit the Consular office during American Citizen Services business hours to complete an enrollment form in person. No appointment is needed, but a valid U.S. passport must be presented during registration.

For updates on current travel alerts and emergency messages for U.S. citizens, visit the Embassy’s website. U.S. citizens are strongly advised to obtain a visa for Burkina Faso before departure. Visas can be applied for by mail or in person at the Embassy of Burkina Faso in Washington, D.C., where a five-year multiple-entry visa costs USD $140. If a visa is not obtained in advance, travelers may purchase one at the port of entry for 94,000 CFA (about USD $190) for a single-entry visa valid for up to three months, or 122,000 CFA (about USD $245) for a multiple-entry visa of the same duration. Once in Burkina Faso, travelers may apply for a five-year multiple-entry visa for 70,000 CFA (about USD $140) at the Visa Office in Gounghin, Ouagadougou.

All visitors must present a valid “International Certificate of Vaccination” (yellow card) approved by the World Health Organization (WHO), confirming they have received a yellow fever vaccination. The Embassy of Burkina Faso in Washington, D.C., is located at 2340 Massachusetts Avenue NW, Washington, DC 20008, telephone (202) 332-5577. Visas can also be obtained from Burkina Faso’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York City. Travelers outside the United States should contact the nearest Burkinabe embassy or consulate for assistance.
