President of the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), Emeka Rollas, confirmed Nwobu’s death to BBC Igbo.Rollas said, “It is true that Odira Nwobu is dead. He died in South Africa.” Reports indicate that Nwobu had travelled to South Africa for a performance with comedian Chibuike Gabriel, popularly known as Untouchable. Fellow actor Ajemba Stanley Chibueze, known as Stanley Ontop, said Nwobu returned to his hotel on Sunday morning after a night out and suffered a hypertensive episode linked to high blood pressure. He reportedly passed away shortly after.

A video posted online shows Nwobu enjoying himself at a nightclub hours before the incident. Many fans have reacted with shock, noting that he showed no signs of distress in what would be his final appearance. Nwobu’s death comes months after he survived a serious car accident earlier in 2025.

He is remembered for his joyful personality, comedy skits, and memorable Nollywood roles. Fans are also using the moment to call for greater awareness of high blood pressure, especially among young entertainers with demanding careers.
