Ted Turner, the influential media entrepreneur who reshaped global broadcasting through the launch of 24-hour television news, has died at the age of 87.A family spokesperson confirmed that Turner passed away on Wednesday at his residence near Tallahassee. The veteran broadcaster had revealed in 2018 that he was battling Lewy body dementia.
Turner is widely remembered for founding [CNN](https://www.cnn.com/) in 1980, a breakthrough that transformed television journalism by introducing continuous 24-hour news coverage. The innovation changed how audiences consumed information globally and became a model later adopted across the international media landscape. He later expanded the brand through CNN Headline News and CNN International.
Beyond news broadcasting, Turner built a powerful cable television empire that included channels such as [TBS](https://www.tbs.com/) and [TNT](https://www.tntdrama.com/). He also launched [Turner Classic Movies](https://www.tcm.com/?utm_source=chatgpt.com) after acquiring the MGM film library in 1985.A similar strategy led to the creation of [Cartoon Network](https://www.cartoonnetwork.com/) in 1992 following his purchase of the Hanna-Barbera catalogue. In 1996, Turner Broadcasting System merged with [Time Warner](https://www.warnerbrosdiscovery.com/), creating one of the world’s largest media corporations at the time. Known for his daring business style, Turner regularly took major financial risks, sometimes nearing collapse before recovering and expanding his empire further.
Outside broadcasting, he also made his mark in sports by captaining the yacht that won the America’s Cup and owning the Atlanta Braves, whose popularity grew through nationwide television broadcasts.Turner’s outspoken nature earned him the nickname “Mouth of the South,” reflecting both his larger-than-life personality and ambitious outlook. “I’m trying to set the all-time record for achievement by one person in one lifetime,” he once said.
Even competitors recognised his influence, with media mogul Rupert Murdoch describing him as one of the most impactful figures in modern media history. Beyond business, Turner became known for his philanthropy and environmental efforts. He donated $1 billion to the United Nations and emerged as one of the largest private landowners in the United States, dedicating large areas to conservation. His personal life often attracted public attention, including his marriage to Jane Fonda and his controversial public comments over the years. He also maintained complex political relationships, including ties with Fidel Castro.
Despite controversies surrounding his career and personal life, Turner’s impact on global journalism remains significant. His introduction of round-the-clock news coverage permanently changed the speed and nature of reporting, allowing audiences worldwide to follow wars, political crises and major international events in real time. Reflecting on his life philosophy, Turner once said: “I’ve always been more of an adventurer than a businessman.”
