President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called on the National Assembly to review existing laws to enable states to establish their own police forces as part of efforts to tackle worsening insecurity across the country. Tinubu made the call in a statement issued on Wednesday while declaring a nationwide security emergency. “I call on the National Assembly to begin reviewing our laws to allow states that require state police to establish them,” he said.

The President added that his administration would support states that have set up security outfits to protect their residents from terrorists and violent groups. He also advised caution regarding vulnerable institutions, stating: “States should rethink establishing boarding schools in remote areas without adequate security. Mosques and churches should constantly seek police and other security protection when they gather for prayers, especially in vulnerable areas.”

Tinubu’s call for state police forms part of a broader security strategy that includes recruiting 20,000 additional police officers, deploying trained forest guards, and strengthening the Armed Forces in high-risk regions. Reaffirming his administration’s commitment to addressing farmer–herder clashes, he highlighted the creation of the Ministry of Livestock Development. He urged herder groups to end open grazing and adopt ranching practices.

“I call on all herder associations to take advantage of it, end open grazing and surrender illegal weapons. Ranching is now the path forward,” he said. Tinubu appealed to citizens to contribute to national security efforts, stressing: “The times require all hands on deck. As Nigerians, we should all get involved in securing our nation.”
