The President of the Handball Federation of Nigeria (HFN), Mr. Jibril Saidu Ojih, has expressed heartfelt sympathy to the players, coaches, and management of Benue Buffaloes who were kidnapped while returning from Lagos after participating in the Ardova Handball Premier League 2025 Phase 2, which ended last Friday.

The team, which finished 9th in the league, was abducted by armed men shortly after passing Otukpo, Benue State, but was later rescued following the swift intervention of troops of the Nigerian Army. In a statement released on Monday, Mr. Jibril described the incident as a distressing and unfortunate experience no athlete, coach, or official should ever face, while also thanking the Nigerian Army for their timely action.

“I extend my deepest sympathy to the entire Benue Buffaloes team. What they went through is unimaginable and no sportsperson should ever have to endure such. We thank God and the Nigerian Army for their safe rescue,” Jibril said. The HFN President also commiserated with the Benue State Sports Ministry, recognising the emotional and psychological impact the event has had on the sports community in the state.

“Our thoughts are with the Benue State Sports Ministry. The board of the Handball Federation of Nigeria and the entire handball family in the country stand with you during this difficult time. You are not alone.”

Mr. Jibril praised the Nigerian Army for its prompt action, noting that their quick response helped avert what could have been a more tragic situation. He called for strengthened safety measures for sports teams travelling across the country, emphasising that athlete welfare must be prioritised.

He further assured that the federation remains committed to supporting Benue Buffaloes as they recover. “We will stand by the team and ensure they receive all the support they need as they heal and prepare for future competitions,” he added.
