Ghanaian authorities have arrested 32 Nigerians living in the country over alleged involvement in cyber fraud. The arrests were confirmed by Ghana’s Minister for Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation, Sam George, who disclosed in a post on X that the suspects were part of a romance scam network. According to him, operatives of the Ghana Cyber Security Authority (CSA), in collaboration with National Security, carried out an early morning operation on Saturday in Kasoa Tuba, located in the northern part of the country.

“This morning, a significant blow was dealt to cybercrime in Ghana. A joint operation between the Authority and National Security led to the arrest of 32 Nigerians running a romance scam syndicate in Kasoa Tuba,” the minister stated. He explained that the intelligence-driven operation is part of ongoing efforts to deter cybercriminal activities and discourage offenders from using Ghana as a base. He added that the government would continue to support the CSA in strengthening its enforcement actions.

Items recovered from the operation are expected to be examined as investigations continue. This development marks the latest in a series of arrests of Nigerian nationals by Ghanaian security agencies in their fight against cybercrime. Just last month, operatives of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) arrested seven Nigerians in Accra over alleged cyber fraud. About three months earlier, security agencies also detained approximately 50 Nigerians following intelligence reports suggesting involvement in human trafficking and cybercrime.

Those arrested are typically prosecuted under Ghanaian law. In October, a Nigerian identified as Jacob Sunday was convicted by the Madina District Court and sentenced to 24 months in prison on charges including unlawful entry and cybercrime-related offences. In September, three Nigerians arrested for theft were handed a combined sentence of 96 years’ imprisonment. Nigeria and Ghana maintain cordial diplomatic relations and are both members of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). Authorities in both countries continue to take firm action against cybercrime, with thousands of arrests recorded annually in connection with such offences.
