Violence erupts in Eastern Cape as protesters burn properties linked to foreign nationals over Nigerian king installation

Protesters in East London in South Africa’s Eastern Cape province reportedly set vehicles and buildings ablaze during demonstrations linked to the installation of a Nigerian traditional leader. The unrest followed opposition to the installation of Solomon Ogbonna Ezike as the leader of the Igbo community in the region, an event that sparked controversy among some local groups.

Demonstrators gathered to protest the coronation but the situation escalated into violence, with several vehicles torched and properties allegedly associated with foreign nationals attacked. Emergency responders were deployed to the scene as fires spread to parked vans, trucks, and other vehicles in the affected areas. Police also intervened to restore order, using crowd-control measures such as stun grenades to disperse protesters as tensions rose.

The title “Igwe Ndigbo,” associated with Ezike’s installation, has drawn criticism from some South African groups who argue that recognising a foreign traditional ruler could conflict with local traditional authority structures and raise sovereignty concerns. While the Igbo title “Igwe” is traditionally used in southeastern Nigeria to denote a monarch, similar titles are sometimes adopted in diaspora communities to organise cultural affairs and community leadership among migrants.

However, the development has faced backlash from certain community organisations and activists who oppose the establishment of foreign traditional leadership within South Africa. Organisers initially described the gathering as a protest against the installation of a “foreign king,” but the demonstration reportedly turned violent as some participants began attacking property linked to foreigners.

Authorities have yet to provide official figures on the extent of the damage, and it remains unclear whether arrests have been made. The incident also reflects broader tensions in South Africa surrounding immigration and xenophobia, where foreign nationals from countries such as Nigeria, Zimbabwe, and Somalia have at times been targeted amid socio-economic frustrations. As investigations continue, local officials are working to assess the situation and restore calm in the affected communities.
