In 2015, a Libyan court sentenced Saif al-Islam Gaddafi to death in absentia for his role in suppressing peaceful protests during the 2011 uprising that ended his father’s rule.Saif al-Islam, the son of Libya’s late longtime leader Muammar Gaddafi, was killed on Tuesday after gunmen attacked his home in Zintan, western Libya, according to his French lawyer, Marcel Ceccaldi. Ceccaldi told AFP that Saif al-Islam was killed around 2:00 pm local time when a four-man group stormed his residence in the town.

Aged 53, Saif al-Islam was long viewed by some supporters as a potential successor to his father, despite being wanted by the International Criminal Court over alleged crimes against humanity. In 2021, he announced plans to run for president, though Libya’s elections were later postponed indefinitely.

His adviser, Abdullah Othman Abdurrahim, told Libya’s Al-Ahrar television that the attackers disabled surveillance cameras before killing him. The identities and motives of those responsible remain unknown.Ceccaldi added that an associate of Saif al-Islam had warned him days earlier that there were concerns about his security.
