Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has dissolved the State Executive Council and terminated the appointments of all Special Advisers. The governor also announced the appointment of a new Chief Press Secretary, Mr Onwuka Nzeshi, while his former Chief Press Secretary, Nelson Chukwudi, was relieved of his duties. No official reason was given for Chukwudi’s removal. The cabinet dissolution was announced in a Government Special Announcement issued on Thursday in Port Harcourt by the new Chief Press Secretary.
Governor Fubara directed all commissioners and special advisers to hand over their responsibilities to the permanent secretaries or the most senior officers in their respective ministries with immediate effect. According to the statement, the governor formally dissolved the State Executive Council and expressed appreciation to the outgoing commissioners and advisers for their service, wishing them success in their future pursuits.
The development is believed to be linked to a recent peace agreement brokered by Bola Tinubu between Fubara and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, during a meeting in Abuja. This marks the third time President Tinubu has intervened in the political crisis in Rivers State involving the governor, his estranged political benefactor and members of the state House of Assembly.
Following the dissolution, Fubara is expected to forward a new list of commissioner nominees to the Martin Amaewhule-led Rivers State House of Assembly for screening and confirmation. Sources indicated that as part of the agreement reached with Wike, the governor is expected to accommodate some loyalists of the former governor in the new cabinet, while certain commissioners who previously served under Fubara and were affected by the dissolution may also be reinstated.
