Nigeria and Angola have entered into a memorandum of understanding that removes visa fees for holders of diplomatic passports from both countries. The agreement was signed by Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, and Angola’s Minister of External Relations, Téte António, on the sidelines of the 39th African Union summit held on Sunday in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Tuggar said the deal had been a long time in the making, stressing that the ability of government officials to travel freely is crucial to deepening bilateral relations. He described the agreement as a key pillar for strengthening ties between Nigeria and Angola, noting that easier movement for officials often paves the way for increased private sector engagement.

According to him, greater official mobility could eventually lead to broader freedom of movement for ordinary citizens of both countries, a development he said Nigeria hopes to see in the near future. Tuggar also called the signing of the MoU in Addis Ababa significant, recalling that the late former Nigerian head of state, Murtala Mohammed, once delivered a landmark address in the Ethiopian capital on the evolution of Nigeria’s political relationship with Angola.

Angola’s foreign minister, Téte António, echoed similar sentiments, expressing confidence that the agreement would serve as a stepping stone toward more expansive visa waiver arrangements between the two nations.
