A 16-year-old aspiring football player, Tommy Ballay-Dean, has passed away after a house fire in Southwark. Another teenager was left in a coma following the incident.Emergency responders arrived at the residence, and firefighters spent nearly two hours bringing the flames under control. Tommy, fondly called Junior, was confirmed dead at the scene.

His friend, Shauny Halsey, also 16, suffered serious facial injuries and critical burns. He was first rushed to King’s College Hospital, placed in an induced coma, and later moved to a specialist centre where he is expected to undergo several medical procedures. Reports indicate the boys had just returned from nearby shops when the fire started. Preliminary findings suggest a possible link to an electric bike battery, though investigators are still working to confirm the exact cause.

In an official update, the Metropolitan Police said the case is not being handled as suspicious at this time and noted that officers are collaborating with the London Fire Brigade to establish what happened. Tommy’s coach, Dean Stanhope, described him as a gifted and hardworking young athlete who dreamed of turning professional. He said Tommy brought energy wherever he went and was deeply passionate about football, treating the sport as his life’s main goal.

Tommy was a student at St Thomas the Apostle School in Peckham and had represented multiple grassroots football teams. News of his passing has led to widespread mourning in the community, with many offering support to his family and contributing to memorial fundraising efforts. The blaze also destroyed Shauny’s family home, leaving his relatives without shelter. Another fundraiser has been set up to assist them as they recover. Authorities have confirmed that inquiries into the fire’s cause are still in progress.
