Michael Jackson biopic opens at No. 1 with massive debut earningsThe long-awaited biographical film about late pop icon Michael Jackson has debuted at the top of the North American box office, pulling in an impressive US$97 million over the weekend, according to industry estimates released on Sunday, April 26.Directed by Antoine Fuqua and distributed by Lionsgate, the movie traces the singer’s journey from childhood fame to global superstardom. The lead role is played by Jaafar Jackson, bringing a personal connection to the portrayal.
Industry analyst David A. Gross described the debut as a historic moment for the genre, noting that the film has achieved one of the strongest openings ever recorded for a musical biopic. While audiences have responded positively, praising its nostalgic and uplifting tone, critical reception has been less favorable. Reviewers have pointed out that the film glosses over more controversial aspects of the artist’s life, including allegations of misconduct. Despite this, plans for a sequel are already underway. Having already premiered in Europe, the film’s global earnings have climbed to nearly US$220 million, according to Exhibitor Relations.
In second place at the North American box office is The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, which added US$21.2 million. The animated sequel has now surpassed US$775 million worldwide after three weeks at the top, reflecting its continued strong performance. Taking third position is Project Hail Mary, an adventure-comedy from Amazon MGM Studios. The film stars Ryan Gosling as a teacher turned astronaut tasked with saving Earth, and has earned close to US$600 million globally during its extended theatrical run.
Fourth place goes to The Mummy, directed by Lee Cronin. The horror film, produced by Warner Bros., follows a young girl possessed during an ancient ritual and brought in US$5.6 million. Rounding out the top five is The Drama from A24. Starring Zendaya and Robert Pattinson, the film explores a relationship falling apart just before a wedding and earned an additional US$2.6 million, bringing its global total to US$80 million.
