In a recent episode of ‘The Honest Bunch’ podcast, Nollywood veteran Kanayo O. Kanayo expressed his concern about the treatment of male actors compared to their female counterparts. He lamented that wealthy men are spending lavishly on female actors, making it appear as though male actors are not as hardworking.
Kanayo pointed out that many affluent Nigerian men provide significant financial support to female actors, often overshadowing the efforts of their male colleagues. “Many Nigerian rich men patronize our women and give them benefits that make us look like we are not working hard,” he said.
He went on to describe how these wealthy benefactors contribute large sums to female actors for their projects, while male actors face skepticism and are told to work harder. “You call a girl, she’s your girlfriend, she says she wants to do a production and demands N100 million to N150 million, and you give her. But if it’s me, KOK, you’ll say, ‘go and work hard, my friend.’”
Kanayo also highlighted the disparity in financial support for medical expenses, noting that it is often men who seek financial help for such needs. “Have you seen any lady ask for financial help for any medical expenses? It’s only the men. We are an endangered species, that’s what I am saying.”
His comments shed light on the perceived inequities within the industry and the challenges male actors face in garnering the same level of financial support as their female counterparts.
