Indian actor Manoj Kumar, renowned for his roles in Hindi films with patriotic themes, passed away on Friday at the age of 87. The death of the actor, often referred to as “Bharat” Kumar due to his strong association with national pride, triggered tributes from across India.

Kumar, who was also a member of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), passed away in Mumbai following heart-related complications. Prime Minister Modi led the tributes, hailing Kumar as an “icon” of Indian cinema and noting that his works “ignited a spirit of national pride and will continue to inspire generations.”

Born Harikrishan Goswami, he adopted the name Manoj Kumar in line with Bollywood tradition. Kumar was a recipient of numerous prestigious awards, including the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, India’s highest cinematic honor. Throughout his career, Kumar was celebrated for acting in and occasionally directing films that emphasized unity and national pride.
