An Ekiti State High Court sitting in Ado Ekiti has sentenced a fake doctor, Olatide Emmanuel, to d3ath by hanging for the m8rder of a woman. The 48-year-old defendant was arraigned in 2025 on a two-count charge of m8rder and impersonation. The charge stated that on June 24, 2019, at Odo Ikole compound in Erinmope Ekiti, he allegedly k!lled Bosede Falade, and on June 9, 2019, at Ajebamidele Street in Otun Ekiti, falsely presented himself as a medical doctor.

Prosecutor Kunle-Shina Adeyemo told the court that the offences violated Sections 316 and 319(1) of the Criminal Code Law, Cap. C16, Laws of Ekiti State, 2012.An eyewitness, Rev. Omotade, said the deceased’s husband called him to report that his wife had d!ed during childbirth. He explained that when he arrived at the clinic, he saw the woman’s body on a stretcher while the self-proclaimed doctor stood nearby.

Omotade added that after examining the body, he suspected the surgery had been carried out unprofessionally and subsequently contacted the police in Otun Ekiti to investigate the matter.During the trial, the defendant told the court that he opened a clinic in Erinmope Ekiti in 2019 after completing a nursing apprenticeship in Lagos State. He claimed the woman came to him for childbirth and agreed, along with her husband, to undergo a Caesarean section.

He stated that the operation was initially successful with both mother and baby alive but said the woman later developed complications and d!ed.The prosecution presented seven witnesses and submitted statements, medical reports, and photographs of the deceased as evidence. The defendant’s lawyer, Adeyinka Opaleke, did not call any witnesses in defence.

Delivering judgment, Justice Jubril Aladejana said the defendant admitted under cross-examination that he was not a qualified medical professional but still carried out surgery on the victim. The judge described the act as reckless and callous, ruling that the prosecution had proven beyond reasonable doubt that the defendant’s actions caused the woman’s d3ath on June 24, 2019. He therefore found Emmanuel guilty as charged and sentenced him to be hanged by the neck until d3ad.
