Donald Trump has announced that the United States will raise global tariffs to 15 percent. This follows an earlier announcement of a 10 percent rate on Friday, after the president invoked a little-used provision, Section 122, of the 1974 Trade Act. The Supreme Court had previously struck down his earlier tariffs in a 6-3 ruling. The law allows the president to impose tariffs of up to 15 percent for 150 days, after which Congress must intervene.

Trump described the Supreme Court’s decision as “ridiculous” and “extraordinarily anti-American.” Some lawmakers have questioned the move. Democratic congressman Ted Lieu said Trump is directing his frustration at the court toward Americans, adding on X that the temporary tariffs will face legal challenges and will likely be overturned by Democrats when they expire. International reactions have also emerged. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz warned that the changes create uncertainty for the global economy. The United Kingdom, meanwhile, stated that it expects to maintain its “privileged trading position with the US.”
