WWE icon and actor John Cena has opened up about one aspect of the film industry that he truly despises: filming sex scenes.
During a recent appearance on the “Club Shay Shay” podcast with Shannon Sharpe, Cena candidly discussed his discomfort with these types of scenes, which he encountered while playing a role in Amy Schumer’s 2015 comedy “Trainwreck.”
Known for his larger-than-life persona in the wrestling ring, the 16-time WWE World Heavyweight Champion admitted that shooting intimate scenes is far from glamorous. When Sharpe asked if filming such scenes is difficult, Cena emphatically responded, “Yes!” He went on to explain that while it may seem like just two people on screen, the reality is quite different.
“Right now, you guys at home think it’s just us,” Cena explained. “But there’s a whole f****** world back there.” He described the experience as “really embarrassing,” pointing out that the presence of a full crew eliminates any sense of intimacy.
Cena also shared that comedic sex scenes pose their own challenges, as they require the actors to amplify the awkwardness while being observed by the entire crew. “It’s different,” he noted, acknowledging that the reality of filming these scenes is nothing like what audiences might imagine.
Despite the awkwardness, Cena’s role in “Trainwreck” was part of a highly successful film, which grossed $140 million at the box office. He also expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to learn from Amy Schumer and director Judd Apatow, describing the experience as invaluable.
