Nigerian singer Speed Darlington, whose real name is Darlington Okolie Achakpo, has regained his freedom after spending two months in Kuje Prison. Speed Darlington’s lawyer, Stan Alieke, announced his release on Instagram, revealing that his client met the bail conditions set by the court.

“Delighted to announce that our client, Mr Darlington Achakpo, Aka Speed Darlington (Akpi), has regained his freedom after two months of illegal incarceration,” Alieke said.

He added, “Mr Achakpo extends his gratitude to everyone who threw in their support and special thanks to my colleagues, Mr Marshal Abubakar Esa, Barr Deji Adeyanju, Barr Hamza Nuh, Barr David.”

The singer’s arrest was linked to allegations of defamation and cyberstalking filed by fellow musician Damini Ogulu, popularly known as Burna Boy.

“For the record, as his team of lawyers, we will be exploring every angle of the law to ensure that he gets justice for his fundamental human right, which was deprived of him by the Nigerian Police Force, and for the unfair/ unjust treatment he was subjected to,” he stated.

The controversy surrounding Speed Darlington’s arrest began when he released a video claiming Burna Boy had an illicit relationship with American rapper P Diddy, who is facing criminal charges in the US.

Burna Boy subsequently filed a petition, leading to Speed Darlington’s arrest on October 4. The singer spent two months in prison before meeting his bail conditions.

The Abuja Division of the Federal High Court had granted Speed Darlington N20 million bail six days prior to his release. Despite his freedom, Speed Darlington’s legal team plans to pursue justice for alleged police violations of his rights.

Speed Darlington’s lawyer, Stan Alieke, emphasized that the singer’s legal team would ensure he gets justice, stressing that the police violated his client’s rights during the arrest and detention.
