The South African authorities have taken Anabela Rungo, mother of Nigerian beauty queen Chidimma Adetshina, into custody. The arrest was made due to alleged illegal residence in South Africa. Anabela Rungo was reportedly arrested in Cape Town, with the Department of Home Affairs, Republic of South Africa, issuing a notice of detention. The South African Police Service (SAPS) enforced the detention.
According to the Home Affairs spokesperson, Siya Qoza, investigations are ongoing into alleged misrepresentation and fraudulent activities by Rungo. In September 2024, Anabela Rungo’s official South African documents were revoked due to allegations of identity fraud in obtaining citizenship. This rendered her ineligible to reside in the country.
Despite the revocation of her documents, Rungo was reportedly residing in Cape Town with Chidimma’s sibling, using her Mozambican passport.Chidimma Adetshina, the Nigerian beauty queen, had faced identity issues, particularly due to her name, which has Nigerian roots rather than South African.
These challenges, however, did not deter Chidimma from pursuing her dreams. She went on to become Miss Nigeria 2024 after an initial rejection in South Africa.Chidimma’s achievements extended beyond Nigeria, as she became Miss Universe 1st runner-up 2024 and Miss Universe Africa and Oceania, representing all African women on the global stage. The arrest of Anabela Rungo has brought attention to the complex issues surrounding identity, citizenship, and immigration in South Africa.
